This Thanksgiving, be thankful for flaked corn and White Zinfandel.
Voting: Right or Privilege?
Is the act of voting a right? Or a privilege? The architects of our Constitution clearly considered it a right, and an important one-the right to vote is mentioned more frequently than any other, even that of free speech or a free press.
But our nation’s military, charged with protecting that and other rights, might well deem it a privilege, possibly even a sacred duty. My uncle Pete, a World War II veteran, certainly did. In 2014-at the age of 99!-he was the oldest citizen to vote in Grandville, Michigan. The local paper interviewed him, along with the youngest voter, who had turned eighteen just days before the election. When asked why he still bothered to vote at such an advanced age, he said it was still his country and he had a responsibility to make sure it was in good hands. I happen to agree with that statement; citizens have an obligation to cast informed, reasoned votes. Another family member put it even more succinctly: ‘If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain’.
It has been quite a year, and we’re not out of the woods yet, either. At every level, our elected officials will be tasked with difficult and very consequential decisions. Shouldn’t they make those decisions with the input of the greatest possible number of citizens?
Proclamation Ale Company, based in Warwick, RI believes in the power of the vote, and they’re backing that belief with a special beer release: a new IPA sold in a 4pk of cans labeled V-O-T-E. On the side labels are quotes from historical figures, including an old favorite of mine from Thomas Jefferson: ‘We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.’
VOTE will be arriving Thursday. It’s a limited release, so don’t hesitate. Also, please don’t hesitate to vote. Every Election Day since we opened our doors, we’ve offered a discount to voters. This year, reflecting the extraordinary volume of mail ballots and early voting, we’re extending that. From now through Election Day, we’ll offer a one-time discount* to any customer who tells us ‘I voted’. This is on the honor system; we trust you.
If you haven’t already done so, please vote. Then come in and stock up on something delicious to drink while we all wait for the results.
* on any full-priced items. Does not apply to Boat items or online specials.
