Not All Cancer is Pink
Given the tidal wave of pink ribbons that washes over us every October, one would be forgiven for thinking that breast cancer was the only cancer, or at least the most prevalent. But it isn’t. In fact, breast cancer accounts for about 12% of new cancer cases each year. What about the other 88%?
Not all cancer is breast cancer. All cancer IS horrible. And all cancer needs our attention and research dollars. But when was the last time you saw a green ribbon (liver cancer) or a white ribbon (lung cancer)? And what percentage of funds raised under the pink ribbon umbrella actually go to patient care, research, or family aid, as opposed to administrative costs or ‘raising awareness’?
Personally, I’m already very aware that cancer kills.
I’ve lost many-too many- friends and family to cancer, which is why we hold a huge benefit tasting for a cancer organization every year. This year, that organization is Mass General’s Pediatric Oncology unit. Any cancer diagnosis is terrible; a child diagnosed with cancer is undeniably horrible.
Next Saturday, we’ll have eight tables of delicious beverages, all our favorite suppliers, and a chance to help make a difference. Cups (above) are your ticket to the event; for each cup purchased, we’ll donate $20. We are also donating 5% of all sales during the event.
Won’t you join us?
