'They look too exciting for so early in the evening'.
Down Beside the Sea
Despite being born and raised thousands of miles away from salt water, once introduced to the ocean I was utterly enchanted. I still am. In all seasons and moods, the beach is my happy place. Salt water heals (almost) everything.
But as lovely as the beach can be in winter, a summer night beside the sea is true perfection: crashing waves, residual warmth from the setting sun, cries of the gulls, and that inimitable salt tang that serves as an internal cue to relax and unwind. Ahhh. I am just dying for some of those.
When I get there, odds are I’ll bring along a bottle of chilled rosé, maybe Chateau Roquefort’s ‘Corail’ or the ethereal loveliness of Bleu de Mer. On the other hand, I might do a white, something so crisp and mineral-driven that it’s thisclose to saline. Hermann Moser’s ‘Green Eyes’ Gruner Veltliner comes to mind, a perfect pairing for some cheese or olives. The soundtrack would run to Suzanne Vega’s ‘Calypso’: ‘My hair blows long as I sing into the wind/I tell of nights when I can taste the salt on his skin. ‘
Sounds heavenly, no? And while I cannot transport you to the beach, I have good news: it’s a pretty short drive. And even better news: you can taste all of the above (and more) at next Saturday’s Sheri vs Rich Smackdown Tasting. If the weather cooperates, we’ll be outside. If it doesn’t we’ll be-responsibly-inside. Either way, we’re going to have a blast. We’d love to see you; it has been far too long since we held a fun event. Bonus points if you bring along a (well-behaved) dog.
Meanwhile, Calypso’s calling. I’m beachbound.
