J. Davies is the sister winery of Napa Valley icon Schramsberg. Originally established in 1862, Schramsberg is one of the oldest wineries (with some of the oldest vineyards) in Napa. Long known for their sparkling wines, in 2009 they started making a still Pinot Noir under the J. Davies label, a tribute to current winemaker Hugh Davies' father Jack. The Nobles Vineyard is in the northern Sonoma Coast, part of the newly-designated Fort Ross/Seaview AVA. Moderate elevation and a big day/night temperature swing result in beautifully ripe fruit with great balancing acidity and structure. The 2012 is richly layered and complex, with red and black cherries accented by vanilla, licorice, and clove. Silky tannins flow into a long dense finish, you pour another glass, and wait-where did the wine go? . (And by the way, if Dad likes a good Pinot, this would make a great Father's Day gift.)
