Mastroberardino Greco di Tufo Nova Serra Duo

The house of Mastroberardino  is almost entirely responsible for the revival of winemaking in the area surrounding Campania's Monte Vesuvio post-WWII. Their efforts ignited a repudiation of pedestrian bulk wine production and a resurgence of high-quality wines that reflected the unique terroir of the volcano. They lavished particular attention on indigenous varietals, many then facing extinction. Greco, Fiano, Coda di Volpe, Piedirosso-many of these grapes survived only due to the efforts of the Mastroberardino family. It would be impossible to over-estimate their influence in returning these wines and this region to world-class status. The Nova Serra vineyard is in Montefusco, at slightly lower altitude than Tufo proper and with a higher percentage of iron and clay in the soil. It typically produces more structured wines. The Mastroberardino family conducted rigorous research into the various available clones of Greco, and carefully matched clone to vineyard site. The result is-in my opinion-always one of the most stunning examples of Greco di Tufo, and one that rewards cellaring. Both 2015 and 2016 are tasting superb right now. Scents of apricot, orange blossom, apple, citrus, and bitter almond. Full, rich, juicy flavors of stone fruits, citrus, and pear. Creamy texture-almost a lanolin feel, but balanced by bright acidity. In short, this is a white wine lover's dream. This wine is easily worth well over its ~$30 price. A further 50% off is just gravy.
