Mastroberardino Falanghina

The house of Mastroberardino is almost entirely responsible for the revival of winemaking in the area surrounding Campania's Mount Vesuvius post-WWII. Their efforts ignited a repudiation of pedestrian bulk wine production and a resurgence of high-quality wines that reflected the unique terroir of the volcano. They lavished particular attention on indigenous varietals, many then facing extinction. Greco, Fiano, Coda di Volpe, Piedirosso-many of these grapes survived only due to the efforts of the Mastroberardino family. It would be impossible to over-estimate their influence in returning these wines and this region to world-class status. Falanghina is the signature grape of the Sannio DOC. This indigenous grape is known for its fresh, mineral, perfume-y and fruit-forward flavor profile. The name probably comes from the Latin falangae, referring to poles that were traditionally used to support the vine’s canopy. Or it could be named for 'phalange'-as in fingers-because the grape bunches resemble long fingers. Pale lemon-green in color, with aromas of ripe pineapple, citrus fruits and white flowers. Notes of honeysuckle and toasted almond on the palate are lifted by lively acidity. Great with shellfish or ceviche. Or just open a bottle at the beach and drink it while the sun goes down.
