Domaine Henri Darnat Bourgogne Rouge ‘La Jumalie’ Duo

In the heart of Meursault, in one of the most storied villages of the Cote de Beaune, the Darnat family has been growing grapes and making wines for nearly 170 years. Henri Darnat took over the domaine in 1985, and transitioned the vineyards to organic certification. He claims a quote from Virgil as his guiding principle of winemaking: 'Be first to dig the ground up, first to clear and burn the refuse-branches, first to house again your vine-poles, last to gather fruit.' That's right, Darnat believes in picking beautifully ripe fruit and then not interfering with it much. The fruit that becomes Bourgogne Rouge 'La Jumalie' is just below the village of Pommard, a vineyard of limestone-rich gravel and clay soils. A long, cool fermentation and 12 months in oak barrels (50% new) yields a wine of both power and grace, overflowing with red raspberry, strawberry, cherry and white pepper. Cliff Notes version: Fruity, supple, real-deal Burgundy. This is wine from a very high rent district, but at a very un-Burgundy price. It might just be the bargain of the century.
