At the risk of sounding like a total snob, I’ll admit that I believe Burgundy is Chardonnay’s spiritual home. Sure, I’ve had nice Chardonnay from California (Oregon, South Africa, etc). But Burgundy…there’s nothing quite like Burgundy. Usually, there’s also nothing quite like its price. But sometimes, we get lucky.
A family estate uniting a collection of the most prestigious, historical vineyards in Burgundy, the winery strictly adheres to organic and Biodynamic farming in order to achieve a balance between the earth, the plant and the winemaker. They believe the Chardonnay grape yields its most complex wines when grown on poor soils, so the primary vines for this cuvee are located in the Haut Cotes de Nuits, on steeper and rockier slopes. They are hand-picked, cold fermented, and aged for 9 months in a combination of new and 2nd pass oak. Before bottling, bits of declassified village wines (Vougeot, Gevrey!) are added. Rich tropical fruit is accented with cool mineral notes. The finish is long and voluptuous. Honestly, it tastes like baby Corton Charlemagne.
