Cotarella Ferentano Bianco Lazio Duo

Falesco, aka Famiglia Cotarella, was founded by brothers Renzo and Riccardo in 1979. Both brothers are more famous for other ventures, Renzo as head oenologist for the Antinori Group, Riccardo for the prodigious list of clients for his consultant winemaker services. They imagined Falesco as a way to bring their considerable expertise to an uncelebrated corner of Lazio and Umbria, the region of their youth. Just as the brothers are better-known for other projects, Falesco is best known for its red wines. But I've always loved this one. Perhaps you will, too. Ferentano is made from 100% Roscetto, an ancient variety indigenous to the Montefiascone region of Lazio which Riccardo Cotarella has single-handedly saved from extinction. This grape's small, compact bunches are naturally high in flavor, which Riccardo discovered was best extracted by the use of dry ice during maceration, allowing for maximum flavor without adding color. The resulting wine is a triumph of balance: both substantial and elegant. Plush and velvety, overflowing with ripe tropical fruit flavors, it has grace notes of fresh herbs and baked apple. Creamy, rich, but finely-etched on the finish. Whip up a mushroom risotto or a perfectly roasted chicken. Pour yourself a glass. Ahhh.
