A family owned and operated winery since 1972, Burgess Cellars was created when Tom Burgess purchased the 1870’s era winery, deciding to concentrate on mountain-grown fruit.
This is not Burgess’ first Chardonnay. But when they decided to create this single-vineyard cuvee, they also decided ‘it would have to be among the best’. To them, that meant Russian River Valley fruit, and also, “goldridge soils” which are like ancient dunes made of dark loam and gritty sand. The Balletto family grows these grapes only 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean, between Sebastopol and Bodega. This is about as cool climate as it gets, preserving acidity and balance even in such voluptuously ripe fruit. The Burgess family buys all of those grapes and turns them into this sultry siren of a Chardonnay.
Light gold in color, with a nose of grapefruit and vanilla. The palate switches over to ripe pears, green apples, pineapple, citrus zest, and minerals. The finish is all cream and spice, with just enough acidity to balance. All that bodacious flavor, half the price.
