Here's Your Chance (to be a retail wine buyer)

Retail Wine Buyer

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness..."
-Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

(With apologies to Dickens) It is the best of jobs, it is the worst of jobs. On one hand, I taste and enjoy dozens of interesting wines every week, with an aim to buying and selling the best of those. On the other hand, I taste and enjoy dozens of interesting wines each week, and I can only select a tiny percentage of those. The life of a retail wine buyer is a double-edged sword: so many wines, so little room. No matter how hard I try, I can't make my 3200 square feet accommodate all the wines I'd truly like to sell. So I make hard choices, always searching for that magic combination of quality and value, preferably from a small, family-owned producer. But every day, I turn down wines that I believe certain customers would love, and I wonder: should I have gotten this one instead of that? What will our customers gravitate towards? Would you do it differently/better?

If so, here's your chance! We're holding a portfolio show next Sunday, and this time, YOU are the wine buyer.

A portfolio show puts you in the driver's seat. A quality import portfolio-in this case, Masciarelli Imports-has dozens of wines we'd love to carry. But we can only pick a few to work with at a time. A portfolio show, where we feature wines available to pre-order, gives you access to a much broader selection.

On Sunday, you can taste several wines each from Bordeaux, South Africa, and California/Oregon vineyards. Chat with the representatives-the people who found these wineries and decided to sell their wines- and learn more about the properties. Ask questions.

When you've decided on your favorites, place an order. Enjoy our portfolio show special discount pricing. Some wines will be available to take home there and then; the rest will be available for pickup the following Friday. Stock up for Easter. Stock up for spring entertaining. Discover some new favorites. Re-discover old ones.

But don't miss your chance. Because on Monday, I'll want my job back.

Masciarelli tasting is Sunday, April 2, 1-4 PM.
