This Week’s Monday Madness

Shakespeare (via Juliet) said it best: ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’ By which she meant that it did not matter that Romeo is from the house her family views as rivals. Perhaps. But names are definitely not foremost in determining the taste of a wine.

For many Americans, Chianti means the black rooster. And for sure, a gallo nero on the neckband is never a bad thing-it means the winery belongs to the Chianti Classico Consorzio. But many fine Classico producers choose not to join the Consorzio. And even more fine producers are located in the other Chiantis: Colli Fiorentini, Colli Aretini, Montalbano, Colli Senesi, etc. Valdipiatta is a Colli Senesi, which simply means that the winery is in the hills surrounding Siena and Montepulciano.

Founded in the 1960’s, Valdipiatta is best known as a producer of Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano. But they also make this sun-soaked little gem of a Chianti.
95% Sangiovese blended with 5% Caniaolo Nero, it ages in large Slavonian oak, to soften Sangiovese’s edges without adding any overt oakiness. The result is a silky, lithe Chianti, overflowing with flavors of red cherry and raspberry with hints of clove, cedar, and herbs. Full and rich, with a long luxurious finish, it would make a great partner for pasta and rich sauces. Grilled meat. Cheese. Or just a cold winter’s night.

It finishes way better than Juliet.

Monday Magic Wine Selection

About Pour Richards Wine and Spirits
who we are

Connecting Good Friends with Great Wine

The idea that became Pour Richard’s was born of many late nights drinking wine with old friends. At least half of every couple worked in wine sales. Sooner or later, after a couple of great bottles, we’d start talking about how we never got to sell our favorite wines. Many of the best bottles in our respective warehouses never saw the light of day because we were all way too busy fulfilling our quotas on the big national brands. Small family vineyards, fun new regions? Those mostly sat there until we closed them out. “Wouldn’t it be great”, we all said, “if we could sell the things we drink?” So, that’s exactly what we’re doing! At Pour Richard’s, you’ll drink like an industry insider – a well-edited selection of wine, beer, and spirits, all at great values.
