Risk vs Reward
Lately, my husband has been MIA. Whenever I look for him, he’s holed up with NFL Draft magazines, newspaper articles, and spreadsheets. That’s right-he’s preparing for his Fantasy Football Draft. And he’s not alone. At this moment, thousands of people are poring over numbers and statistics, trying to pick the best possible ‘team’.
It’s all about risk vs reward. Do you go after someone like Tom Brady or Aaron Rogers? A pick like that will cost you a lot of draft ‘capital’. But perhaps that’s worth it for a sure thing.
But consider this: the owners who drafted Matt Ryan last year. Ryan wasn’t a sure thing, but for those who took a chance on him, the investment certainly paid off. And because that investment was a relatively small one, they had a few pennies left to invest in other players.
My husband complains that some of his league members take the same players year after year, because they’re comfortable with them. He tends to go in the opposite direction, taking a leap of faith on an undervalued treasure or diamond in the rough.
It’s no wonder I love this guy, because that’s very similar to how I look at wine. Sure, I could sell you a trophy, blue-chip Napa Cabernet. You’ll recognize the winery, have seen its ads in the Wine Spectator or Food and Wine. It will make you comfortable. If that’s what you’re seeking, we definitely have those wines, but you will pay a certain price for that comfort.
Or…you could take small leap of faith, and try something else. I believe the Matt Ryan of red wine this season might be a certain Sonoma Cabernet. It’s bold, it’s rich, it’s spicy. It’s $20, and WOW does it over-perform for that price.
Or maybe it’s a Syrah we recently tasted. From Sicily. Or our new favorite Cotes-du-Rhone. The Nebbiolo that outdoes a lot of Barolo…for half the price. The Cabernet Franc from Bulgaria, improbably named Winter, and even more improbably priced, at $15.
Yes, you sacrifice the comfort of the familiar. But with these and other choices, we’ll help you mitigate the risks of the unknown. The rewards are championship-worthy.
